You might be saying, "How?" Fortunately, the writer also gives us the how in the surrounding text. "Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love" Eph. 5:1-2. When I am wondering which way to go in a decision I need to make this is the verse I want to use as my compass. Is one direction more loving toward others? Maybe one is more self-serving.
The well known WWJD is a great acronym to help us live the way of love. What would Jesus Do? If you've never read the book that spurred this thought to life I highly recommend it, "In His Steps" by Charles Sheldon (1896). It was more recently brought to life by a minister in Topeka, Kansas (in 1990) and his congregation who started wearing WWJD bracelets. But back to the issue at hand--asking this question is a good start to finding our direction.
What will help me be a more loving person today? Each day we are filled with the opportunity to follow the way of love. We are also given many chances to walk in the way of self. I write often in this genre because this is an area the Lord is opening the eyes of my heart to more and more in my own life. So if I step on your toes just know that I've already tripped over my own as well.
I might have the opportunity in the grocery store--the family ahead of me in line has to put back the chicken because they don't have quite enough to pay for all their grocery bill. The way of love might look like my asking the cashier to just add the chicken to my bill. I might have the chance to show love by giving someone a ride home when they would normally take the bus. The way of love might be doing chores for a neighbor who isn't able to do for himself.
Will you watch with me for opportunities to take a love walk today?
