Shhhhh!

The writer of this proverb obviously doesn't appreciate a quick wit. Actually, although many of us wish we could be quicker on our feet and have a snappy reply, those snappy replies all too often are better left unsaid. What might sound funny in an off-the-cuff remark can often leave bite marks on an unintended victim.

I have had to come back later with an apology after I made a remark that made people laugh in the moment, but after I'd given it some thought realized the sarcasm at the root could have caused offense. Another proverb from the Bible says that a person will enjoy good things from the fruit of their lips. If I am to enjoy this good I must make sure that what comes from my lips is pleasing, God-honoring and uplifting to others.

I find that while a quick wit might be applauded, a thoughtful reply can be much more appreciated. When I pray for a Holy Spirit guard to be in my thoughts and on my lips my words truly can be like apples of gold in settings of silver. With a Holy Spirit guard I am more loving, more caring, more kind. I have a chance to step back mentally and choose patience, gentleness and self-control.
