You will notice this doesn't say that people who love will never fail. We will always have failures. We will sometimes not love well. But LOVE never fails.
I have failed to love perfectly many, many times. I have loved impatiently--I love you, but could you hurry it up and be more perfect in this area? I have loved unkindly--I love you, but you're just really bothering me right now. I have loved with a touch of envy--I love you, but I wish I'd get what you have...God are you listening? I could go on listing my failings at loving well, but I'm sure you get the picture. And I'm also sure you can recognize yourself in some of my blunders. But when I was doing love imperfectly was I really loving or was I loving, but...?
1 John 4 tells us that God is love and how He showed his love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. Love never fails because God is love. He is the ultimate expression of love. Only by living through Him can we learn to love. And what kind of living does He want for us? Abundant, full (see John 10:10) living!
So live a full, abundant life in the God who is love. The more we learn to live in Him the fuller, richer our lives will be. The more we learn to love in Him the fuller, richer our love will be. We will begin expressing the love that never fails.
