What does it mean to share a meal together? What is Jesus inviting us to in this? We, as believers, have often taken this passage to mean that Jesus is inviting those who don't believe in Him, who don't follow Him to accept Him as God's Son. However, if we look at the entire passage we see that this is a message to the church, to those who have already accepted Christ as their Savior. So I ask again, to what is He inviting us?
Prior to His declaration that He is standing at the door knocking He describes the believers--they are neither cold nor hot, in fact, because of their lukewarm condition He is about to spit them out of His mouth; they believe they are rich, yet they are actually wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. Are we this church? Is our walk of faith simply lukewarm? Are we so comfortable in our faith that we are not stretching, growing? What about this church believing they are rich--they have acquired wealth and there is nothing they need? Does that describe us? Have the trappings of our lives become what we are? Is our living at ease possibly covering up the pitiful condition of our soul, our spirit?
He then counsels to obtain the remedy for each of these conditions from Him. He has what we need to live lives of passion, of purpose. That is what He is offering. For me, I want to live a life of passion and purpose. However, there definitely are times when my comfort seems more important than my growth.
Won't you open the door with me? He wants to come in (why is He even outside?) and share a meal with us. He wants full-on rapport. He wants us to sit down together and eat and talk. He wants to have earnest conversation. Let's open the door!
