Being a Grammy I love this section of Scripture. It tells us to teach God's words to our children (and grandchildren) as we do life together. Some of the best lessons I've learned have been just through doing life. I love teaching, but the best way I can teach my grandchildren is through doing, not saying.
I remember my mom having a conversation with a grocery story clerk (a veritable stranger!) and as a teen it was totally embarrassing, but as I look back on it she was teaching me to have a kind word for anyone I might encounter. She was showing me how everyone deserves courtesy. She was walking and talking Jesus for me.
To my dad no one is a stranger. He walks five miles a day out in the country--can you just imagine how many people along his way he chats with? He even knows the dogs, which ones are friendly, which ones are too far from home. My dad has a gift of putting people at their ease. He can relate to young as well as old. When I visit church with my parents my dad gets lots of hugs. Isn't that a commentary on life you'd want on your own?
Once again, God's word has a promise and a premise. If we do this...then we will have this. Teach God's word those around you through the way you do life and your days will be many. Is it any wonder my kids saw not only their grandparents, but great grandparents and even great great grandparents? I have a rich heritage that I plan to leave as a legacy for my grandchildren.
