A Serious Heart Condition


Power and love--two of the greatest forces of nature. Two of the greatest forces of God. One of my very favorite verses on the power we have available to us is Eph. 1:19,20. It speaks to the incomparably great power for us who believe--that power being the very same that God exerted when He raised Christ from the dead. That is an amazing power. As I think of the apostle Paul praying that we have the power to grasp the love of Christ it truly makes me stop and ponder how well I grasp the entirety of the love of Christ.


All any of us have to help us understand love is a flawed human imitation of the enormity of God's love. We might think of a mother's love--my mom loves me unconditionally; she knows my faults and hangups and loves me anyway. We might consider the love of a spouse--I am convinced that my husband has a serious eye condition. He sees way more good in me than I possess; that's how his love expresses itself. We can even compare they way we love--there is nothing my children could do that would make me love them less. I would give my life for theirs gladly. Yet even these precious examples are only a mere tip of the iceberg of love compared to the love of God.


Can I explain it? Can I give the words that could open your mind to truly comprehend the enormity of God's love? No, only the great power of God could do that. So I join the apostle Paul today as I pray for you that He strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
